High-Speed Fiber Optic Internet Service

Waitsfield and Champlain Valley Telecom is currently using Fiber-to-the-Home technology to deliver telecommunications services (telephone and high-speed Internet) to several new developments, various schools, town offices, and select business customers in our service area. In addition, eight rural parts of our service area will be built out with fiber over the next three-years funded by the Broadband Stimulus award that we received (these areas are listed below). While fiber is only available to a limited number of our customers, all customers located in our telephone service area can receive high-speed DSL today with speeds available up to 18Mbps in many locations. For more information on fiber availability, click here.

A fiber optic connection will provide:

  • Increased Reliability - Fiber optics are extremely reliable and are not as susceptible to weather, distance and other variables that influence telecommunications services delivered using copper facilities. Fiber is currently the most reliable telecommunications infrastructure available anywhere.
  • Faster Speeds -Fiber optics have a much greater capacity than traditional copper lines. This means the capacity for faster and much more consistent Internet speeds. Faster than ever before, with speeds** up to 50Mbps downstream and 25Mbps upstream.

Fiber Optics Frequently Asked Questions

What is Fiber-to-the-Home?
We are currently in the process of replacing the copper facilities in select areas with state-of-the-art fiber optics. This type of network is known as Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) because the fiber optic cable runs directly to your home or business. Fiber optics are not only more reliable, but also provide much more capacity than traditional copper telecommunications facilities. The increased capacity will allow you to experience advanced services and to transmit larger amounts of information at faster speeds. Fiber optics have been used by Waitsfield and Champlain Valley Telecom for many years and provide the backbone infrastructure that carries your calls and Internet traffic throughout our network and to the outside world. Fiber-to-the-Home extends the fiber optic network right to your door. The fiber optic cable will connect to a new Optical Network Terminal (ONT) that will be placed on or inside your residence and will replace the existing copper Network Interface Device (NID). The Optical Network Terminal brings together the fiber-optic cable and the telephone wiring inside your location. Power for this interface is provided by a small Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) that will be installed in your basement, or another mutually agreeable location.

What is an Optical Network Terminal?
An Optical Network Terminal (ONT) replaces the existing Network Interface Device (NID) that is currently located on the outside of your location. The ONT contains the electronics that terminate the fiber optic cable and convert the signals of light back into usable telephone and Internet signals.
